More than 85 attendees met at the historic Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, N.C. August 1 – 3 for the AICC Southeast Summit, hosted by Gary Brewer, President, Package Crafters, and AICC Director. Formerly called regional meetings, Summits have expanded educational and member content and for those reasons are intended to draw from a broader geographic area. While the majority of attendees were indeed from the Southeast, members came from as far away as California and Wisconsin.

Tuesday opened with a day-long AICC education seminar for 15 participants led by Ed Wallace of the Relational Capital Group on Relationship Capital, a necessity in a successful enterprise. A Tuesday night welcoming reception was held on one of the many large patios at the resort offering wonderful views of the surrounding mountains that give the Asheville region the name “The Land of the Sky.”

Wednesday’s program kicked off with Brewer, opening the meeting and Tony Schleich, President, American Packaging Division of The Lawrence Paper Company, and AICC Chairman speaking on his strong theme of Principled Leadership. Mike D’Angelo, AICC Vice President, followed with an update on AICC’s activities and Destination Model. Ed Wallace was the morning’s keynote speaker, taking the group through a spirited, participatory session on Building Relationships That Last. The morning session closed with technology presentations by CST Systems, Advantzware, Baldwin Technology, EFI, KemiArt USA and Astral Adhesives & Coatings.

Attendees enjoyed a box lunch on the bus ride over to Custom Packaging in Arden, N.C. Gary West and his staff separated the visitors into groups of 10 and took them on a very thorough tour of this modern, 150,000-sq. ft. sheet plant. Southern hospitality and Custom Packaging’s graciousness was on full display through their giving each visitor a gift of products from the western part of North Carolina packaged in a digitally printed, personalized box.

After some time to relax back at the amazing Grove Park Inn, an evening reception was held on another patio where once again the Blue Mountains and Great Smoky Mountains held everyone’s attention.

Thursday dawned to perfect weather and an outside breakfast for golfers at the Grove Park Inn’s Country Club, followed by a shotgun start for 44 golfers. Prizes were awarded at the closing luncheon for top 3 foursome’s scores along with five closest to the pin holes and a longest putt hole.
