July 22, 2019 – AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, has opened registration for the 2019 Southeast Summit, August 20- 22, at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. The Summit will feature a tour of WestRock Graphic Solutions and educational sessions on succession planning and marijuana in the workplace, an HR concern for many.

Leon and Terrance Resnick, Resnick Associates, will present Assuring the Successful Continuation of Your Family Business. In understandable language, business owners will learn needed tools and strategies in the areas of business succession and wealth preservation and eventual transition of assets (with special focus on their business). Among the areas of focus will be why successful businesses ultimately fail, the importance of coordinating estate plans with succession plans, addressing active vs. inactive children within a family business, liquidity issues, valuation methodologies that will satisfy the IRS while lowering the tax bill, and insurance funding mistakes that often result in millions of dollars in taxes paid that could have been legally avoided and solutions to avoid this scenario. The session wraps up by tying in many of the areas of the seminar discussion into a compelling real-life family business case study that is sure to strike a chord with everyone in the audience. Special attention will be given to the most recent tax act and how the current federal estate tax benefit can actually end up harming businesses – and how to avoid this situation.

Leon B. Resnick and Terrance K. Resnick, identical twins, are partners in Resnick Associates, a nationally recognized business succession, estate planning, and life insurance advisory and implementation planning firm with offices in Kansas City and Harrisburg, PA. Resnick Associates has spoken before and worked with over 150 trade Associations, including AICC, and their business owner members individually. Coca-Cola has also had the firm present to their privately owned bottling company owners. Resnick Associates has written and been interviewed for many articles in business magazines and newspapers on the topics of business succession, estate planning, and proper due diligence and acquisition of life insurance for the privately held business owner. The firm has lectured at law schools and is a co-founder of the Elizabethtown College Family Business Center in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, one of the largest college-based family business centers in the United States.

Keynote speaker, Christine V. Walters, JD, MAS, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, Sole Proprietor, FiveL, will address the growing concern of marijuana in the workplace in her session, Got Pot? Marijuana in the Workplace & Substance Testing.

Across the nation, there are three trends related to laws addressing the use of marijuana: (1) legalization; (2) decriminalization: (3) and legal use of medically prescribed marijuana. Each has actual or potential implications in the workplace and to employers’ related policies, practices, and programs. Join this interactive program as we look at the latest legislative trends, court interpretations, and practical application for pitfalls to avoid and proactive practices including:

  • Which states have legalized, decriminalized and/or authorized medically prescribed marijuana;
  •  A “Top Ten” list of associated, potential pitfalls that may impact employers’ liability, employment practices and/or operating costs;
  • How to balance federal rules (DOT, OSHA, DOJ) that are stricter than state laws
  • Who, when, how and for what substances can an employer test without running afoul the ADA and related testing laws; and
  • Some practical tips, suggestions, and questions to consider for updating your general and related workplace policies, programs, and practices.

Christine has been engaged as an expert witness for the defense, presented at

conferences across the country, testified before U.S. Congressional and state legislative committees and federal administrative agencies. She has been interviewed and quoted in a variety of media, including television, radio, and print media. Her first book, “From Hello to Goodbye: Proactive Tips for Maintaining Positive Employee Relations” was one of the publisher’s (SHRM) “Great 8” best-sellers in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. After working nearly ten years in human resources administration, Christine started FiveL Company in 1998 as a part-time practice while working full-time at the Johns Hopkins University as Program Director and Interim Department Chair. She discontinued FiveL Company when she joined the law firm of Saul Ewing LLP in 2000 and restarted the practice when she ventured out on her own to provide full-time human resources and employment law consulting in September 2002.
