AICC Announces the 2019-2020 J. Richard Troll Scholarship Recipients & the 2019 Student Packaging Design Competition Winners
October 4, 2019 – AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, is pleased to announce the recipients for the 2019-2020 J. Richard Troll Scholarship and the winners of the 2019 Annual Student Packaging Design Competition.
This year, the first-place student design winners and all scholarship recipients were offered an all-expense paid trip to the AICC 2019 Annual Meeting taking place September 16-18, 2019, at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto, Ontario.
All the winners in the student design competition receive a monetary award and plaque. The troll scholarship recipients receive a plaque and a monetary scholarship is sent to their respective schools for the next calendar year.
AICC 2019 Student Design Winners
Design to an Opportunity – Structural Challenge
Students had to create a “Hardware Shipper Box” to be sent to customers of a fictional hardware store. The package had to contain 1 hammer, 4 traditional light bulbs, and 1 box of nails. This challenge focused on the structure of the box so it had to withstand the rigors of courier delivery without anything being broken. New this year, the students had to perform a 1A drop test and submit a video essay.
- The First Place winners were Kelsey Gunsky, Nirav Chhajed, and Dane Holst from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo for their entry titled “Lite.Fit.Fun.”
- The Second-Place winners were Cynthia Lee, Andrew Monson, Hanna Crowley, and Sydney Meertens from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo for their entry titled “Nailed It.”
- The Third-Place winners were Alyssa O’Halloran, Samantha Stahl, and Juan Carlos Mosqueda from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo for their entry titled “Toolbox 2 Go.”
Design to an Opportunity – Graphics Challenge
Students had to design the graphics for a fictional hardware store’s Do-It-Yourself pack that would ship directly to customers. Theoretically, the box would contain items for DIY projects around the house. This challenge focused on the graphics of the box using one of the following processes: line or screen art, screened images, process or modified process color, or digital printing. New this year, the students had to submit a video essay about their project.
- The First-Place winners were Jonathan Murillo, Matthew Gordon, Hector Ramirez and Vijay Singh from the University of Texas at Arlington for their entry titled “The Mill Bird Cabin.”
- The Second-Place winners were Maria Nino, Lydia Davis, Caitlin Jacobs, and Courtney Thompson from the University of Texas at Arlington for their entry “TreeHouse Hardware”
- The Third-Place winners were Joshua Judson and Kory Yamafuji from Indiana State University for their entry “K&J Chalkpaints”
Design to an Opportunity – Corrugated as Art
Students had to design a structure of the team’s choosing, out of corrugated, that was inspired by Canada.
- The First-Place winners were Alexander Hall and Maddie Zuzek from Dunwoody College of Technology for their entry “Canada Maple Leaf”

Undergraduate Student Recipients:
- First Place Winner: Erin Wilson, Virginia Tech
- Second Place Winner: John Edward Dizon, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo
- Third Place Winners: (tied) Morgan Gavin, Clemson University and Justin Chan, Ryerson University
