Hazardous Materials General & Security Awareness

Tuesday, February 6, 2024 | 2:00-3:30pm ET

This webinar is a general awareness and security awareness session to familiarize hazmat employees with the structure and concepts of the US Hazardous Material Regulations (HMR). It meets certain requirements of the regulations, makes employees generally aware of their responsibilities under the HMR, and helps prevent mistakes that can lead to violations.

Learning Objectives

  • Identification of Hazardous Materials for the purposes of HMR
  • Hazard Classification System of the HMR
  • Use of the Hazardous Materials Table
  • Packaging hazardous materials for shipment
  • Markings and labels for packages of hazardous materials
  • Placarding
  • Documentation: shipping papers
  • Loading, unloading and segregation
  • Understanding of the HMR training requirements
  • Requirements for incident reporting
  • Security awareness

Who Should Attend?

  • Hazmat Employees
  • Sales and Marketing Professionals
  • Operators, Printers, Designers, Artwork Approvers, Quality Control Personnel, and Customer Service Representatives

Why Should I Attend?

The most common violation issued by US DOT is a lack of training. Training records are routinely inspected during regulatory audits. Lack of training is seen as the primary cause of non-compliant shipments of hazardous materials. These violations can, and often do, lead to unsafe incidents in transportation, fines, or frustrated shipments that can be costly in both fines and liability.

The most important part of a general awareness training is to raise the consciousness of the employees in their day-to-day job activities about when NOT to do something; unless they have specific knowledge of how to do it in compliance with the HMR. Customer complaints from non-compliant packaging are costly to repair. Even minor mistakes can cause total loss of value for a box run. While box makers are not central to the requirements of the HMR, they do perform tasks that require a compliance program, it is important and cost effective to perform these tasks with compliance systems in place with trained employees.
