This session introduces the principles of Continuous Improvement (CI) and Lean Manufacturing. Participants will learn why CI is critical for competitiveness, how to recognize improvement opportunities, and the role of culture and leadership in driving sustainable change.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the history and principles of Lean and CI.
  • Recognize the 8 wastes and how they manifest in corrugated converting.
  • Identify cultural barriers and enablers to Lean adoption.
  • Learn how leadership can shape CI success.

Structure:

  • Introduction to Lean & CI
  • The “8 Wastes” in a corrugated plant (examples: overproduction, long set-up times, damaged board, waiting on tooling, excess handling of sheets)
  • Case for CI: safety, quality, cost, productivity
  • Leadership and culture (employee engagement, problem-solving mindset)

Sándor Wolkensperg, Vice President of Operations, Royal Containers | Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing Expert

Sándor Wolkensperg is a highly experienced manufacturing executive specializing in continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, and operational excellence. He currently serves as Vice President of Operations at Royal Containers, where he drives process optimization, waste reduction, and sustainable performance improvements across the organization.

Sándor holds a bachelor’s degree from McMaster University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Windsor. He is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a certified Lean Manufacturing Practitioner, bringing a rigorous, results-driven approach to operational leadership.

Throughout his career, Sándor has held key leadership positions at Smurfit Stone, RockTenn, Graphic Packaging International, and Cenveo Labels and Packaging. In addition to his corporate work, he teaches Continuous Improvement at Conestoga College in Cambridge, Ontario, helping the next generation of professionals develop practical skills in lean and process improvement.

Passionate about sharing knowledge, Sándor delivers webinars and workshops that equip professionals with actionable strategies to improve efficiency, enhance productivity, and achieve measurable results.
