A. Lee Shillito, former owner, founder and President of Triad Packaging of Tennessee, Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Tuesday, May 28, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was 70 years old.
Lee was an active member of AICC, the Independent Packaging Association, having served on the Board of Directors in the 12 years spanning 1995-2007. He served first as a Regional Vice President of AICC’s Southeastern States, a region ranging from the Carolinas to Florida and west to Alabama, then as Director at Large. In 2000 he was named to AICC’s Executive Committee as a Vice Chairman and rose through AICC’s chairs to become Chairman of the Board of
Directors in 2004-2005. During his tenure on the Board he served as chairman of several committees, including the Membership Committee, one of AICC’s most prominent committee positions, and was the inaugural Chairman of AICC’s Government Affairs Committee. As Chairman of the Government Affairs Committee, he helped organize and attended the Corrugated Industry’s annual Washington Fly-in, the most recent being in June of 2018.
As Chairman he traveled extensively on behalf of the Association, visiting all ten regions in the United States as well as Canada and Mexico. He represented the North American contingent who attended the International Corrugated Case Association’s Global Management Summit in San Jose, Costa Rica, in the Spring of 2005. In 2010 he was named to the AICC/Paperboard Packaging Hall of Fame during the Association’s annual meeting that year in Baltimore. During the award presentation his many miles of travel on behalf of the Association were recognized and appreciated by AICC’s many members.
In addition to his industry service to AICC, he was also active in the Fibre Box Association (FBA) and was a longtime supporter of the International Corrugated Packaging Foundation (ICPF).
Active in civic and fraternal organizations, he served on the Board of the Salvation Army; President of the Rotary Club; Paramount Board, Northeast State Foundation Board; Frontier Health Board; President of the Chamber of Commerce and United Way Endowment Board Chairman. He was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Rachel McFerrin Shillito, his daughters Angela Shillito Miller, Tina Shillito Hogue, Amy Shillito Moseley and nine grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Bill Shillito, Hugh Shillito and Richard Shillito; one sister, Evelyn Willis; and his special brother-in-law Mike McFerrin.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 31, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Weaver Funeral Home, 630 Locust Street, Bristol. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 700 Cumberland Street, Bristol, with Rev. Joe Dunagan officiating. Per Lee’s request a reception will be held following the service at the Bristol Train Station, 101 M.L.K. Jr. Blvd, Bristol.
