A Finnish start-up company, Jospak Oy, and Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, presented at FEFCO Technical Seminar 2019 a new, sustainable fibre-based food tray. It can reduce the use of plastic by up to 85%, compared to traditional plastic food trays. The package combines the best functionalities of corrugated board and plastics and is recyclable according to local recycling schemes.

The fibre-based food tray, developed by Jospak Oy, uses an innovative design that combines a removable plastic film on the tray making it suitable for hermetically sealed packaging. In addition, the corrugated tray is compatible with existing packing processes and logistics in the food industry. After use, the consumer can easily remove the plastic film and recycle the board and plastic materials into dedicated recycling streams.

The package is safe for direct food contact and is suitable for different kinds of fresh and processed foods. Metsä Board's lightweight white kraftliner is used in the package and provides a high-quality printing surface that enables premium brand messaging. The white kraftliner is also made from renewable premium fresh fibre sourced from carefully managed northern forests, enhancing the sustainability of the package.
