The Fibre Box Association (FBA) reports that U.S. Box Shipments in the first half of 2023 were 189.15 billion square feet (BSF). This figure is down 8.2% from a year earlier and down 9.1% from 2021. For comparison, it was the lowest figure for the first six months of a year since 2016 when 185.6 BSF shipped. There is a silver lining; shipments in each month of the second quarter of 2023 improved, with June’s 33 BSF exceeding June 2019’s 31.9 BSF and comparable to 2018 and 2017.

Bloomberg Green Markets reports demand sentiments improved heading into August from three months ago, and October sentiments signaled flat year-over-year box demand. Containerboard inventory at the close of the second quarter was approximately 2.6 million tons, representing about 4.2 weeks of supply. This is a 2% improvement compared to the first quarter and 9% better compared to 2Q22.
